CIVA Ultimate Update

Well, I just got back from my first practice with CIVA, a local high school who, for the first year, is trying to get a team started. I am proud to state that after only a week or two, they are well on their way to establishing a team. Even today with the snow, sleet, and hail there were around 10 players with 4 coaches. According to Randy, the head-coach, there are normally over 15 that show up. Amazingly they practice every weekday for over an hour.

As for skill level.. they still have some way to go. But that is well expected for a new start-up team. There really are no stand-out players in terms of skill, but there are several who seem to grasp the strategy quite well. The coach played a bit in Madison, WI (where ultimate is quite large). He also played with a club team in Denver a few years back. I think for now, the team is in perfectly capable hands.

Right now, I think the kids are actually committed to playing seriously. This is quite a nice surprise as a lot of high school ultimate players are not competitive or serious at all. I think that there could be a decent team here in a few years.

I will keep you updated after each week. Although they practice every weekday, I am only able to attend on Fridays.

Enjoy your weekend!
